Introduction to Backcountry Skiing
Spending time in the Scottish mountains during winter can be truly spectacular and there is something very special about exploring the Scottish mountains beyond the pisted runs.
Our Introduction to Backcountry Skiing weekend will give you the chance to learn all the essentials of backcountry skiing and develop your confidence. Your instructor will help you develop backcoutry specific skiing strategies, knowledge of specific equipment related to backcountry skiing, route planning, avalanche awareness and map reading, ensuring that you finish with the skills needed to keep you safe.
Due to global warming, Liquid Footprints cannot guarantee completely snow covered mountains and there will be quite likely a degree of up and down hill walking. However, over the two-day course we will give you plenty of time so that you can learn and develop your backcountry skiing. Nothing will be rushed and we will spend time focusing on your learning to ensure that, at the end of the weekend, you will have the skills to be safe.
What you need to attend the course
You must be able to ski blue runs confidently and be able to link turns together smoothly. On red runs you must be able to control your speed with a range of strategies including side slipping and changing the size of your turns. Being able to use crampons and ice axe is not essential but it would be good if you had a working knowledge. You must also be fit enough to hike/ski/skin up and down hill and through soft snow for 2-3 hours and still be able to ski afterwards. You must also be capable of carrying a rucksack with your equipment throughout the day.
Who will be your instructor
Your weekend will be headed up by Malcolm O’Reilly. Some of you may have come across him as he has led some of kayaking and canoeing trips. Malcolm has been guiding and instructing since 1998 and has a vast wealth of experience on skis.
